Single Stage Dental Implants Mean Fewer Procedures

At Esmail Oral, Facial and Dental Implant Surgery, Dr. Nadeem Esmail is trained in the single stage dental implant method. This means that you get your dental implants done with fewer procedures, so you can get right to healing and using your new teeth. When it comes to dental implants, being able to get through it with fewer visits is ideal for anyone, whether you’re seeking one dental implant or to replace all your teeth. In many cases, the implant can even be placed on the same day as the extraction.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth, also known as a crown, that is attached to a titanium post known as an abutment. The post is attached to an implant that is surgically placed into your jawbone under your gum line. The crown sits on top of the gum line, the same as your natural teeth.

How Dental Implants Are Installed?

Dr. Esmail, our oral and maxillofacial surgeon, will extract the teeth to be replaced and then place the implant in the jawbone. Bone grafts may be necessary to ensure that the implant remains secure. After the implant is placed, the healing process takes approximately 6 weeks. After the healing process is complete, a post will be placed on the implant and a crown will be fixed to the post. Once this post and crown are placed, your implants may require some more healing, but they will be permanent teeth that are built to last.

Time is allowed for bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.  A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

Who Benefits from Dental Implants?

Any person who has damaged teeth can benefit from dental implants. When teeth or jaw bones are damaged extensively, bone grafts may be needed to attach the implants that will anchor the new false teeth. Unlike dentures, dental implants are not removed. They are new permanent teeth.

Why Should You Get Dental Implants?

When natural teeth are damaged to the point that they need to be replaced, there are a few choices available. Dental implants are a permanent solution that requires minimal extra maintenance beyond brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings, just like you’d take care of your natural teeth. Unlike other options, dental implants are not removable. They don’t have to be affixed with an adhesive, and they aren’t likely to come loose throughout your lifetime. They are truly a replacement for damaged teeth.

Types of Dental Implants

All dental implants aren’t installed in the same way. Dr. Esmail is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and is well-versed in the most innovative procedures available. Some of the treatment options you may consider include:
  • All-on-4 allows for fully functioning teeth to be installed in one procedure on the same day. This means less swelling and healing time for patients, less post-operative pain, and a shorter recovery time.
  • Implant supported replacement for lower dentures that replace all missing teeth in the lower jaw give you a more secure attachment for lower dentures. There are several options available with different types of implants that fix your dentures to your jawbone.
  • Implant supported overdentures are a more cost-effective solution for replacing a full set of teeth. It is a bridge supported by dental implants and often reduces the need for additional bone graft surgery.

“Don’t be afraid to Smile.”

For years I’d felt like a part of my body was missing — because my teeth were. My dentist told me that dental implants would make me feel and look a lot better. OK, I said. Now, I’m thrilled. I can smile, eat anything, and enjoy a good laugh with my friends.

Surgical Advances in Dental Implants

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. Esmail is able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction – further minimizing your number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist.  Dr. Esmail performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary.  The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.
