Before Anesthesia and Surgery
- Please do not eat any food or liquids for eight hours prior to your surgical procedure. This includes no water, chewing gum or candy. If Dr. Esmail instructs you to take medications the morning of your surgery, please use only a small sip of water to swallow the medication.
- Please arrange for transportation with a responsible family member or friend to and from the surgery appointment. Please note that a taxi/uber driver will not be allowed to take you home after surgery. On arrival, be sure we know your driver’s name and phone number. It is important that someone be with you after surgery at home for your initial recovery. You (the patient) will not be able to drive for 24 hours after the surgery.
- You can brush your teeth the morning of the surgical procedure.
- Hydrate the day before the procedure. Drinking plenty of fluids prevents dehydration and helps with starting your IV.
- Wear comfortable clothes including a short sleeve shirt. No flip flops or open toed shoes please.
- For postoperative pain control, please have a bottle of regular strength ibuprofen (Advil) and regular strength acetaminophen (Tylenol) on hand. We will teach you how to alternate the medications for pain control.
- If you are on any blood thinning medications (Brilinta, Xarelto, Eliquis, Plavix, Coumadin, etc.) please let the doctor know at least one week prior to surgery.
- DO NOT wear eye contacts on the day of your procedure.
- DO NOT bring any valuables or wear any jewelry (no rings, earrings, chains, toe rings, other metal piercings or watches).
- DO NOT apply any of the following to your skin, hair or face the morning of surgery: makeup, creams, lotions, hair gels, sprays, perfumes or powder. Using any of these products will add bacteria to the skin and increase the risk of infection.
- DO NOT smoke or vape for 12 hours prior to surgery.
- If you are not recovering at home, it is very important that we have the phone number where you will be after surgery.
- If there are any changes to your health history, or you develop a drug/food allergy between your consultation and surgery, please let us know.
